- When you say 56.7k modem do you mean 14000 or 28800 modem. There is
- really no such thing as a 57.6k modem per say and yes you can get 57600
- bps througput with a 14400 modem and 115200 with a 28800 modem. How?
- Text, unix binaries, word and many other compressable files are
- compressed by the modems v.42 compression capabilities in much the same
- way that Stacker or Drivespace setup hard disks store data compressed on
- the fly. V.42 can compress up to 4:1 or 57600 for 14400 and 115200 for
- 28800 modems. In the real world few files can be compressed by the full
- 4:1 compression ratio. Also remember 57600bps is bits per second not
- bytes. If you want to figure your character or byte throughput divide
- 57600 by roughly 10 and you'll get your real throughtput. Its really 8
- but due to modem and various protocol overhead you effectively loose some
- bits to "overhead".

- It is my usderstanding that IDSN modem rates are 2X 64K bits or a max of
- 128Kbits/second. With compression the throughput can be as high as 512000
- bit per second or potentially over 4 times the speed of an analog modem.
- I've heard that this is rarely the case though and with the advent of V34+
- and parallel port modems capable of higher than 115200 port speeds the
- real world speed advantages is probably less than 2X over analog modems.
- If someone can dispute this with real data I'll become a believer, but at
- this time I really don't see ISDN as a cost effective upgrade for most of
- us.
- BTW:
- The 57600 or DTE refers to the speed from your computer to modem internally.
- The 16550 UART is a modern serial port fifo buffer that effectively deals
- with todays high speed modems fairly well.
